Baked Apple Chips - Happy 4th!!

Baked Apple Chips, ButterYumI've had a crazy busy week, so I haven't enjoyed any time in the kitchen, but I wanted to post something for the 4th and thought about these yummies.

The only time these baked apple chips required of me was the time it took to slice the apples and preheat my oven. It doesn't get more simple than this folks. I plan to make lots of these for the kid's lunchboxes when school is back in session.

And hey look, they have a built-in star motif - perfect!

Happy Independence Day!

Baked Apple Chips

Arrange thin apple slices in a single layer on a greased or lined baking tray. Place into a preheated 400F oven and immediately reduce the temperature to 170F; bake for about 2-2 1/2 hours, depending on how thick they are, and how crispy or chewy you like them.

Note - I don't sweeten mine, but some like to give them a sprinkling of powdered sugar. Ground cinnamon would also be a nice touch.

  23. Good day! I saw your photos on flickr and had to check out your blog! How inspiring that you started with no experience and now cooking what looks to be absolutely amazing food with 4 kids!! I am 26 with 3 children under 4 and been cooking consistently almost 3 years. I still feel like a beginner as my children do cramp my kitchen style with their picky taste bugs, but it's a challenge I love to take. Like you I like to do everything I can from scratch. So sorry about the long comment, I just love running across foodies- especially mom foodies with lots of children! Have a great day. Look forward to perusing through your blog!!!

  25. This looks so easy and it's a great way to use up apples and less calories than making apple pie or cake. Thanks!

PS The Wildlife Refuge has been located on Broad Channel Neighborhood of Queens since the 70's, but it doesn't get much publicity. It's part of the national parks system now. Very interesting!

  26. I had no idea these were so easy to make! Can you dry other fruits this way too? I will definitely be whipping these up for fall lunches. Thanks for the tip!

  27. These look wonderful! We just picked up some organic apples at our farmer's market and this will work nicely. My daughter is 10 and just beginning to love her time in the kitchen. I think we will try these with a dusting of sugar and cinnamon for a snack on the go.

  30. These are fun and I did get a dehydrator for Christmas...:@)

  31. Great healthy snack idea. I'll keep this bookmarked for when it isn't 95 degrees and our ac is running. I try to avoid the oven in the summer, but in the fall will be perfect during apple season.

  32. Good morning! I love apple chips but I've only eaten the Seneca ones. I'll have to try these since they're healthier and less expensive. Have an awesome weekend!

  33. I'm having a senior moment because I thought that I had commented here, but I haven't.

I love this idea. I can taste them in my head right now with cinnamon on them. And wouldn't the house smell so wonderful if you did it in the fall? (Because I think apples/fall in my head)

  34. Nice peeking in, Patricia! The apple slices do look really good. Looks like you cut them super thin. Did you use a knife or a slicer?

  42. QUICK QUESTION:
DO YOU PUT THE APPLES IN THE OVEN RIGHT AFTER LOWERING THE TEMPERATURE TO 170F..?
AND WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO STORE THEM?
    THANKS!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi - Yes, put them in right after you lower the temp to 170F. Once the apple chips are completely cool, I store them in a zip top bag - we eat them within a week or so.

    :)
