I don't know about you, but I take my camera with me just about everywhere. Consequently, I have tens of thousands of digital photos stored on my computer - so many that they're starting to bog down my system. I imagine other bloggers have had the same problem, so I'm really, really interested in knowing how you've dealt with the issue. All suggestions are welcome - can't wait to hear from you.
We transfer them to Cd's and Dvds.. make 2 copies:)
ReplyDeleteI wish i had set up a better organizing system though..I simply wrote Summer 2010.. Jun~Aug.. Boys..etc..I wish I had made a sheet w/ more info..of every CD:)
I bought an external storage drive for all my photos and digital scrapping files. It works well BUT my first drive failed and a local "expert" repair shop told me they were all lost. My clever son managed to retrieve them thank goodness and I'm now fanatic about making backups on CD/DVD.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say pretty much the same thing that La Table De Nana said. LOL To start, I used sites like Picasa and Photoshop to organize the pics I wanted to keep and also to clean up the ones that I didn't. Then I just put them on discs.
ReplyDeleteI keep them in those heavy paperboard boxes that you can get at the craft stores. I also chose a pic that best represented what was on each disc, then printed it out on plain copy paper to use as little dividers between them.
Probably not the most professional way to do it, but it works great for me!
(Saw your post on Ruth's Real Food and was intrigued by the "yummy" blog name. I'm following now)
External hard drive would be better, I've heard that CDs deteriorate!
ReplyDeleteI been using the apple "Cloud" to store them... and I back up my system with Backblaze.. so I know they are safe and offsite... I take so many, having tons of CD is not an option.. I tried the external drive route, but like La Table De Nana, it malfunction and I lost a good chuck of pictures.. so I don't trust it anymore...
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem so I 'm glad you asked this question!
ReplyDeleteSame..I transfer those to CD's and DVD's .I would do it even if tehy were not bugging my system.Just as backup;)
ReplyDeleteI agree, the pricey external hard drive I bought failed! Lovely!!! We tried the CDs when we were taking more photos. Now I am using flash drives that can hold a lot larger amounts and also are much quicker to upload to. I label them and put them in small baggies (but sometimes they have been "borrowed" and then I can't find them. Guess I need to put them in the safe. I also am not saving as many of my blogging photos as I have them on my blog and now in my book. At first I was just taking the whole file.
ReplyDeleteYou know whatever we do, they will make it obsolete in a litte while!!!!
Since we own an IT company and have servers, I just put a copy up on a server for safe keeping. Unless the server crashes, which would be bad on so many levels, they're fine and safe.
ReplyDeleteI don't save my photos to my computer but to two external hard drives that are synced to each other so I actually have 2 copies of everything if one should die. No problems yet!
ReplyDeleteI use both photobucket and a external harddrive.
ReplyDeleteGreat question...and one I really haven't thought about enough. Good to read all the suggestions! Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Patricia~
ReplyDeleteHi Patricia,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I have Carbonite Online Backup for all my digital files. It's only $55 a year and my computer has crashed, so I am a testimonial to what can happen and how EASY it is to get all your files back! (Gee, I wish they were paying me for this endorsement!!) Anyway, I think also Picasa has all my photos backed up. I also had an external hard drive, but was concerned that unless I packed up my EHD and took it with me everywhere, it was at risk of burning up in a house fire (should we have one). So I thought the safest was Carbonite. For the money, I think it's great. Still, because I'm cautious, I've also got them still on my computer. Just a little scary not to.
THANK YOU for entering my Soap'n'Such GIVEAWAY. Plese pass the word along. :-)
I store a lot of my pictures on Flickr, you might need a Pro account depending on how many you have, but the cloud should be good for what you want. Especially as this covers eventualities like if (god forbid) your house burns down, or your burgled.
